Support For The Childbearing Year

Heart of Gold Birth WNC

Hi! I’m Ulrike!

Who am I, and why are you here reading my ‘about me’? Good questions!

Why are you here? Chances are you’re pregnant, and considering a home birth.

Who am I? Well, there are many answers to that question. I am a mother of 3, a wife, a traveler & adventurer. I love the outdoors, homesteading & gardening. And I LOVE to support women in pregnancy, during labor & birth, and into their postpartum (and beyond!).

My birthwork journey began in 2012, after the home birth of my second daughter.

Though my eldest’s birth in 2008 was attended by community midwives, we had her at a local birth center in Austin TX (not at home). The experience, though *fine*, left a lot to be desired. It was more medical, and less personal and attentive, than I was led to believe it would be (come to find out this is quite typical in the birth center setting). I’ll never forget driving to the birth center, contracting (10/10 do not recommend). Nor will I forget needing to go to a postpartum appointment on day 2- getting dressed, getting in the car and driving to the birth center with everything so new and raw. To be cracked wide open, then to be asked to get in a car two days later. Nope.

My immediate takeaway was that “I could have/should have done that at home”.

In 2011, after an incredible pregnancy, my second daughter was born at home (as was my 3rd, in 2018, of course), in the water, with the most loving, kind, and attentive midwife.

I was forever changed. THIS is what it was about, and how it was meant to be. To be lovingly held and witnessed. So simple, yet so profound.

How dare we, women/the motherbaby dyad, and families, be separated from our God-given rights to birth where and with whom we choose?! How egregious that we have been systematically lied to about the innate vitality of pregnancy, and our capacity to birth- the rewards of which are innumerable!? The ripple effects felt for days, weeks, months, years, GENERATIONS.

In 2011 the fire was lit, and in 2012 I took steps in earnest to answer my calling. And so it has been ever since.

I have been passionately and exclusively supporting women and their families (in varying capacities) during pregnancy, birth in the home, and postpartum for over 13 years,  8+ of which in the role wherein I currently find myself.

I support home birthing women & families in the greater Asheville area. We live in Mills River, NC, and I travel to families within a 2 hour radius.

If you would like to connect regarding any of my services and offerings, please reach out!

I’m so glad you’re here! 🌀
